The difference between handmade candles and mass-produced candles
Hand poured candles generally cost more than mass-produced candles. That is the same for many other industries. Fast food vs a home cooked meal. Having photos taken at a big box store vs having a home photo shoot with the photographer of your choice. You can’t compare them and probably shouldn’t because they are different experiences.
Our candles are made from quality ingredients and those cost more to source. Often, mass produced candles use less expensive materials and that is reflected in the price.
How they’re made
We hand mix, measure, pour and individually test each candle.
Quality - this is a craft, a labour of love and passion that we pass on to you. Factories use machines and produce consistency. Each hand poured candle will be the same yet different.
Awareness - We know exactly what went into the candle. We’ve felt the materials and we’ve seen how it reacts under different conditions.
Wax
Wax is the heart of candle making.
Most mass-produced candles are made using petroleum-based paraffin wax. Oil is used to make paraffin. Though all burning creates carbon, using a plant-based wax cuts down on the use of oil. We use soy or a coconut/soy blend for our wax.
A lot of people try to say that soy wax isn’t toxic while paraffin wax is. According to the National Candle Association, that isn’t true. Neither choice has been shown to be toxic. It’s about the quality of the chosen wax. You can read more about that here if you choose.
Wicks
There used to be an issue with toxic wicks before regulations (as in they no longer use a lead core) were put in place. Most candles are now considered safe to burn. We choose to use wood wicks in our candles. You can read more about that here
Containers
We use glass or metal containers for our hand-poured candles. This reduces plastic waste and the container can be used later for storage or decoration.
Packaging
We use simple, minimal and easily recyclable materials. Paper and cardboard are primarily used for packing up your orders. We don’t use more than we need.
