August Moon Rise is an independent fragrance studio creating candles and objects for the home.

Fragrance is where we begin: with atmosphere, memory, place, mood and the strange associations that make scent so personal. Some fragrances are familiar. Some are more difficult to place. The point is not to tell you what to feel, but to make something worth noticing.

Everything here is made in small batches in Ontario, Canada.

A candle is an open flame. Treat it like one.

Always:

• Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

• Keep away from drafts, flammable objects, children and pets.

• Keep the wax pool clear of matches, wick trimmings and debris.

• Never leave a burning candle unattended.

• Never move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquid.

• Do not burn longer than four hours at a time.

• Stop burning when approximately ½ inch of wax remains in the vessel.

Candle vessels become hot during use. Allow yours to cool completely before handling.

AMR candles are made with plant-based waxes, primarily soy, selected for their burn quality and the way they carry fragrance.

Our wood wicks are made from cherry wood sourced through Forest Stewardship Council-certified mills. They were chosen for their soft crackle, wide flame and beautiful burn.

Because soy wax is a natural material, it does not always behave with perfect visual uniformity. Frosting, slight variations in surface texture, colour changes and other small imperfections can occur.

We consider that part of working with the material—not a flaw to disguise.

AMR fragrances are built from fine fragrance oils, essential oils, aromatic isolates and carefully selected synthetic materials.

We choose materials for the fragrance they allow us to create as well as for safety, stability and responsible sourcing. Natural is not automatically better, and synthetic is not automatically lesser. In some cases, a well-designed synthetic material is the more responsible choice when a botanical ingredient is scarce, endangered or environmentally difficult to source.

Our fragrance materials are cruelty-free and selected according to the standards and documentation supplied by our fragrance manufacturers.

More importantly, we choose them because they allow us to make interesting things.

Usually, it needs one of three things: trim · tilt · time.

Tilt when lighting.

Rather than holding the flame over one spot, tilt the candle slightly and allow the flame to travel across the width of the wood wick.

Keep the wick short.

Wood wicks perform best when trimmed to approximately 3/16–¼ inch.

If your wick is too tall, it can struggle to draw wax efficiently enough to maintain a flame.

Remove excess char.

Before relighting a cooled candle, gently remove loose blackened wood from the top of the wick.

You don’t need to excavate it. Just remove the brittle char and relight.

Tunnelling happens when a candle repeatedly burns down through the centre without melting enough of the surrounding wax.

On early burns, give the candle enough time to establish a broad, even melt pool before extinguishing it. Larger vessels naturally require longer burn sessions than smaller ones.

You do not need absolute edge-to-edge liquefaction every single time. What matters is giving the candle enough time to burn properly rather than repeatedly lighting it for very short periods.

Think less about grams and more about where the candle will live.

Smaller formats
Bedrooms, bathrooms, desks, bedside tables and people who like changing fragrances frequently.

Mid-sized formats
Kitchens, offices and everyday living spaces. More presence and longer burn time without becoming a permanent fixture.

Large formats
Living rooms, open spaces and people who tend to live with one fragrance for longer stretches.

Monument formats
A candle that behaves almost like an object in the room. Choose one when you want scale, longevity and presence.

There is no correct size. There is only the way you actually use candles.

Small beads of fragrance can sometimes appear on the surface of soy wax, particularly after temperature changes.

Your candle has not gone bad.

Allow it to return to room temperature and, if necessary, gently blot the surface before lighting.

Avoid storing candles in hot vehicles, cold garages or prolonged direct sunlight.

Natural soy wax is responsive to its environment. Sometimes it shows.

Because eventually the flame gets too close to the bottom of the vessel.

As the wax level becomes lower, heat becomes increasingly concentrated in the base of the container. Continuing to burn a candle beyond that point can overheat or damage the vessel or the surface beneath it.

Stop using the candle when approximately ½ inch of wax remains.

There is supposed to be wax left.

Fragrance materials—particularly vanillin and some other aromatic compounds—can cause candle wax to deepen or change colour over time.

Light and oxygen can make that change more noticeable.

It is cosmetic and does not necessarily indicate a problem with the candle or its fragrance.

Store candles away from prolonged direct sunlight when possible.

A reed diffuser continuously releases fragrance without flame.

Place yours somewhere with gentle air movement, away from strong heat and direct sunlight.

Insert your reeds and allow them time to absorb the fragrance. More reeds generally create greater diffusion.

For a stronger burst of scent, carefully flip the reeds from time to time. Protect surrounding surfaces when doing so, as diffuser oil can damage some finishes.

When performance begins to decline, replacing saturated reeds can help restore diffusion.

Sola flowers diffuse fragrance by drawing oil through their stem into the porous flower.

Before inserting a new flower, trim approximately ½–1 inch from the base of the stem at a slight angle. This exposes fresh material and helps the oil travel upward.

Place the stem into the diffuser and allow time for absorption.

As the flower absorbs oil, its appearance may change slightly. That’s part of the material doing its job.

Room spray is the quickest way to change the atmosphere of a space.

Shake before use.

Mist into the air rather than directly onto delicate surfaces, finished wood or fabrics. If using near textiles, always test first in an inconspicuous area.

Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and keep away from children and pets.

Store away from heat and direct sunlight.

AMR vessels may be refilled up to three times, provided they remain in excellent condition.

Before every refill, inspect the vessel carefully.

Do not reuse a vessel that is chipped, cracked, damaged or showing signs of structural wear.

To prepare it, allow the candle to cool completely, soften remaining wax with hot—not boiling—water, clean gently and allow the vessel to dry completely before installing the refill.

After its third refill, retire it from candle use.

Limits are useful.

AMR does not take individual custom candle orders.

For existing AMR vessels, the Refill Edit allows you to choose a new fragrance and continue using a vessel you already own.

For something less predetermined, you can also choose your own fragrance and vessel combination from the available pieces in the shop.

Select collaborative projects with businesses, organizations and creative partners are considered separately.

Our candles are made with 100% soy wax, a natural material designed to create a soft and subtle fragrance experience. If you are accustomed to the strength of paraffin-based candles, it may take time to adjust to the gentle diffusion of soy wax — this is part of its clean and natural charm.

If your item arrives damaged during shipping, please email us within 5 days of receiving your order and include a photo of the damaged product and packaging. Once verified, we’ll gladly send a replacement.

Orders are shipped via Sendle, a 100% carbon-neutral carrier, or hand-delivered locally when possible. Each order is carefully packaged to ensure your products arrive safely and beautifully.

Please allow 3–5 business days for order processing before shipping. Delivery times vary by region and are determined by Sendle’s network. Once your order ships, you’ll receive a tracking link to follow its journey.

If you live in a region eligible for local delivery, we’ll contact you directly to coordinate a safe and convenient drop-off.

August Moon Rise is not responsible for delays caused by the carrier, incorrect addresses provided at checkout, or weather-related disruptions. Once a parcel is marked as delivered by Sendle, ownership transfers to the customer.

Candle Safety

WARNING: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always burn within sight and keep away from flammable objects, drafts, children, and pets.

Burn only on a stable, heat-safe surface and avoid sudden temperature changes. For best results, allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface before extinguishing. Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.

Keep the wax pool free of debris and the wick centered and trimmed to 3/16”–1/4” before each lighting (only trim when the candle is at room temperature). Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains.

Do not move or touch the vessel while the candle is lit or while the wax is still liquid — containers will become very hot during and immediately after burning.
