love is an action

Do you spend time considering who you surround yourself with and how that came to be?

You are influenced by the people around you. Whether that is coworkers, neighbours, friends, family, peers, neighbourhoods or greater communities; how you interact with these individuals and groups impacts your overall happiness. Social Health is one of many aspects of overall health and well-being. It is understood to be your ability to establish and maintain desired relationships. Social Determinants of Health are the major influences of how you interact with the world around you.

What Can I do to Increase the Quality of My Relationships?

To enhance the quality of your relationships, it's essential to invest time and effort into nurturing them. Start by actively listening to those around you, showing genuine interest in their thoughts and feelings. Communication is key; be open, honest, and transparent in your interactions to foster trust and understanding.

Empathy plays a pivotal role in building strong connections. Put yourself in the other person's shoes to better grasp their perspective and respond with compassion. Cultivate a supportive environment where both parties feel valued and respected.

Quality time is invaluable for any relationship. Make a conscious effort to spend meaningful moments together, whether through shared experiences, engaging conversations, or simple gestures of kindness. Building memories and creating bonds through genuine interactions can significantly strengthen the relationship.

And, don't forget to express appreciation and gratitude. Acknowledge the importance of the people in your life and let them know how much you value their presence. Small gestures of gratitude can go a long way in deepening connections and fostering a sense of closeness.

Realize that Love is an Action not just a Word

Love is often thought of as a feeling, expressed through words of affection and endearment. However, at its core, love is truly an action that requires effort and commitment. It is in the small gestures of kindness, the consistent support during challenging times, and the selfless acts of consideration that love is most evident.

When we choose to actively demonstrate love through our actions, we show not only that we care but that we are willing to invest our time and energy into nurturing and strengthening our relationships. Actions speak louder than words, as they say, and this is particularly true when it comes to love.

While expressing love verbally is important, it is the tangible ways in which we show our love that truly make a difference. Whether it's making someone their favourite meal, offering a listening ear when they need to talk, or simply being there through thick and thin, these actions all serve to deepen the bonds of love between individuals.

Love is found in the simple act of listening - truly listening - to someone's words, allowing their thoughts and feelings to wash over us without interruption or judgment. It's present in the moments we set aside our own needs and desires to prioritize those of another, demonstrating selflessness and empathy.

It's in the handwritten note left on a bedside table, the cup of tea prepared with care, the reassuring touch on a weary shoulder. It thrives in the acts of kindness, big and small, that show a person they are seen, valued, and cherished.

Ultimately, love is not a passive state but an active choice. It requires effort, intention, and commitment. It is in the daily gestures, the persistent support, the unwavering presence that we truly embody the essence of love. So, let us remember that love is not merely felt or spoken - it is lived and breathed in the actions we take each day.

Get Outside and Connect with the People you Love

I mean this both physically and mentally. How often do you go outside and experience nature? How often to go outside your neighbourhood and experience something unfamiliar?

Step outside and soak up the sunlight, breathe in the fresh air, and feel the earth beneath your feet. Invite your friends, family and neighbours to join you in your adventures.

Whether it's a leisurely stroll in the park, a scenic hike, or a relaxing picnic, spending time outdoors with people fosters a sense of togetherness and creates lasting memories. Disconnect from the digital world, engage in meaningful conversations, and cherish the simple moments shared under the open sky.

Learn Something New

Learning something new is not just about gaining knowledge; it's a powerful tool to strengthen relationships. When we explore new ideas, hobbies, or skills, we open up endless opportunities to connect with others on a deeper level. Sharing our newfound knowledge can spark engaging conversations, foster collaboration, and create meaningful relationships.

Whether it's mastering a new recipe together, taking up a language course as a team, or attending a workshop on a topic of mutual interest, the act of learning together builds trust and understanding. It shows that we are willing to grow and evolve alongside our loved ones, colleagues, or friends. By engaging in this journey of discovery as a collective, we not only enrich our minds but also nurture our ties to each other.

Be curious, open-minded, and supportive, knowing that every new lesson learned is a step towards a stronger, more connected future.

Connect to your Values

Deepening your relationship through connecting to your values can be a powerful journey of self-discovery and growth. When you and your partner take the time to reflect on what truly matters to each of you, it creates a strong foundation for a more meaningful and fulfilling connection.

By understanding and sharing your values with each other, you can build trust, empathy, and respect in your relationship. This deep level of communication allows you to appreciate and support one another in more profound ways, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

As you align your actions and decisions with your values, you create harmony and authenticity within your relationship. This authenticity strengthens your bond and creates a safe space for vulnerability and openness, enabling you to navigate challenges together with resilience and understanding.

Ultimately, by connecting to your values together, you and your partner can cultivate a deeper, more enriching relationship built on mutual respect, acceptance, and love. This shared journey of self-discovery not only strengthens your connection but also brings you closer as you grow individually and as a couple.

Set Friendship Goals

Mari Andrew has a wonderful class on SkillShare. One of the lessons is around setting friendships goals and I found this really helpful. Check it Out!

  1. Send out cards to people. Make sure you know the important dates in your friends lives; birthdays, anniversaries, kid’s birthdays etc.

  2. Random Acts of Kindness. Baked some muffins? Bring some over to your neighbours. Let them know you were thinking about them. Your friend is having a tough day? Send them flowers or give them a call. When someone pops into your mind, let them know you’re thinking of them

  3. Listen.

    Listen to your passions.

Listen to the passions of your friends.

    Listen to the greater community

Give yourself credit for the work you put into relationships. These do not develop and maintain themselves overnight. Work and thought and effort went into each relationship you have. Honour yourself for putting in the work
